The Air Force Academy's own visitor page puts the change into three words. The new Hosmer Visitor Center sits just outside the North Gate and "offers easy access to visitors, with no base entry required." That phrase matters if you're hosting guests in Northgate between now and New Year's.
For years, taking guests to the Academy meant driving through the North Gate, finding the Cadet Chapel and maybe walking part of the Santa Fe Trail. The chapel is closed for restoration, and in 2026 the gate rules and the trail changed too. The Academy stop has moved to the strip of land between I-25 and the gate. Planning a guest day around it now comes down to dates, not directions.
What It Takes to Get Past the Gate Right Now
The Academy changed its installation access rules effective March 1. Visitors without a Department of War ID now need a sponsored pass. The Trusted Traveler program is suspended, and every gate checks 100% of IDs. Here's how getting a guest a pass works today:
- A DoD ID holder sponsors the visitor and submits a pass request through the Academy's visitor link.
- The 10th Security Forces Squadron's Pass and Registration Office runs a background check. The decision comes by text within 72 hours.
- On the approved date, the guest goes to the North or South Gate. Anyone 18 or older shows a REAL ID-compliant ID along with the pass.
- Guests without a REAL ID must go in person to the Pass and Registration Office at the South Gate. It's open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and waits of one to two hours are possible at peak times.
Guests with event plans follow a different track. Ticketed sporting events, scheduled Admissions tours, cemetery visits and Planetarium reservations each go through the sponsoring organization, which sends a QR code for pre-registration. Passes are issued one event at a time. The Academy warns that registering for several at once cancels the earlier registrations. A guest who wants a Planetarium show on Friday and a game on Saturday has to register for the second one after the first is over.
The Cadet Chapel is also off the list. The Air Force Civil Engineer Center's restoration update from September 29, 2026, says the project is on schedule for beneficial occupancy in April 2028 and contract completion in August 2028. According to the same update, crews are installing exterior metal cladding and, inside, plaster walls and dalle de verre glass cassettes, while the first batch of Catholic pews is being restored offsite. If your guests last visited before the restoration, the building they remember won't be open to them again for about two more years.
That leaves a free, walk-in visit right next to the North Gate, and that visit has its own calendar.
What the Free Side Holds
The General Bradley and Zita Hosmer Visitor Center opened to the public on May 16, 2026, the day after a VIP ribbon-cutting. It was the last project in the Colorado Springs City for Champions initiative. It was built through a partnership of the Academy, Blue & Silver Development Partners, the U.S. Air Force Academy Association & Foundation and the City of Colorado Springs. More than 1,600 people came to the public opening, and the first visitor in line waited two hours.
There's no wait like that now. Admission is free, parking is free, and no military ID or base access is needed. Guests coming from Hotel Polaris can walk over on the bridge. A visit usually runs one to two hours.
The 34,000-square-foot building tells the story of the 47-month cadet experience through themed galleries. The highlights guests tend to ask about:
- The grand atrium. It's 108 feet tall, with tetrahedra that rise 40, 45 and 50 feet, a glider hanging overhead mid-loop, recorded sounds of celebrations and ceremonies, and Front Range views through the glass.
- Interactive exhibits. Guests can learn what a class crest means, find career paths on the Polaris Star display and hear the Air Force and Space Force core values at a mirrored wall.
- The exit. The visit ends in a 3,000-square-foot gift shop and team store, which is the best spot for Falcons gear for the drive home.
There's no café on the Academy's list of center amenities, so food is across the bridge or down the road.
The Dates That Close the Door
This is the part that can catch a host off guard. The Academy's current visitor center page, updated October 1, 2026, lists hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It says the center is closed on all federal holidays, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Many of those dates fall right when out-of-town visitors tend to arrive.
| Date in the guest season | Why it matters at Hosmer |
|---|---|
| Monday, October 12 | Columbus Day, a federal holiday |
| Wednesday, November 11 | Veterans Day, a federal holiday |
| Thursday, November 26 | Thanksgiving, a federal holiday |
| Thursday, December 24 | Christmas Eve, listed closure |
| Friday, December 25 | Christmas Day, a federal holiday |
| Thursday, December 31 | New Year's Eve, listed closure |
| Friday, January 1 | New Year's Day, a federal holiday |
The schedule has shifted since opening. The Association & Foundation's announcement from opening week said the center would be open on weekends and holidays and closed only on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Academy's page is the newer source, so plan your Veterans Day weekend around it. If your guests' trip lands on a holiday, check the Academy's site the week before.
Thanksgiving week is the easiest one to get right. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving aren't on the closure list, so a guest who arrives Wednesday can do the visit on Friday.
Across the Bridge, and Down Spectrum Loop
Hotel Polaris opened in November 2024, and the Gazette described it at the time as home to six food-and-beverage spots. The hotel's dining page now lists Pamela's, The Aviator, Thunderbird Bar, Lovie's Market, Doolies and the Pool Bar. Since the Hosmer Visitor Center has no food service, the bridge sets up a simple order for the day. Start with coffee and grab-and-go snacks at Lovie's Market. Do the galleries. Then head to The Aviator, the rooftop bar with views of the Academy and the mountains, or sit down at Pamela's for regional cuisine.
Hotel Polaris has a seasonal Wings of Winter program, but its page doesn't list 2026 dates yet. Last year's holiday lineup isn't a guide to this year's, so check back once the hotel posts it.
Spectrum Loop, a few minutes east, has the rest of a guest day.
Texas de Brazil opened at 140 Spectrum Loop. Its announcement is dated August 5, 2026. It serves Brazilian-American rodízio, with meats flame-grilled and carved at the table, a salad area of more than 50 items and private dining rooms. Private dining helps if your visitors are a whole extended family.
Grey Hawk Park, at 950 Spectrum Loop, opened in December 2025. It has accessible walking loops, an inclusive playground, a multi-use field, half-court basketball, a picnic pavilion and soft-surface nature trails that lead to an overlook. After a morning indoors at the galleries, it's a place for younger visitors to run around.
Wing Force opened September 5, 2026, at 1824 Democracy Point, Suite 110, near InterQuest and Voyager, in the space that used to be the Halal Guys. It serves fresh, never-frozen chicken: hand-breaded tenders, boneless wings, sauces and dry rubs, plus family meals for a night when nobody wants to cook.
The Walk That Used to Cross the Academy
The access change that moved the Academy visit outside the gate also closed the trail that used to run through it. The New Santa Fe Regional Trail segment across the Academy has been closed since March 1, 2026. Bike Colorado Springs says the closure cuts "the crucial trail link between Monument and Colorado Springs." The Academy lists it as closed until further notice, with no reopening date. It has closed for security reasons before, starting January 4, 2025, and again in June 2025. Guests who remember walking it on an earlier visit will need a different route.
The old North Gate trailhead lot is permanently closed, so it's no longer a starting point. The open options nearby:
- Palmer Lake Recreation Area. The northern trailhead has parking, picnic tables and restrooms. About a half-mile along the trail from there is Santa Fe Open Space, which had a 1.75-mile singletrack network for hikers and easy mountain biking when the Gazette covered its opening in 2022.
- Baptist Road or Third Street in Monument. El Paso County lists both as northern-area trailheads. The county also lists an access point at Ice Lake, but the Academy advises against parking there because freight trains can block cars from leaving for hours.
- Edmonson Trail Head, 250 E. Woodmen Road. The Academy sends trail users here for the southern section, which runs north toward the base.
- Fox Run Regional Park. From I-25 Exit 156A, go east on Northgate Road. The park has four miles of multi-use trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, lakeside amenities and a dog park, so it works if the guests brought a dog.
For a guest who just wants a quick walk between lunch and dinner, the Grey Hawk Park loops are closer than any of these. For a longer outing, start at Palmer Lake, where the trail is open and the parking is straightforward.
